Why Is Coconut Oil the Best Mixing Agent?

Coconut oil is a diverse and healthy fat has been used for generations and for a multitude of reasons.

Want something to boost your morning coffee? Coconut oil.

Even if you want to use a healthier oil when cooking or baking, again coconut oil is the one to reach for.

But, there are some health benefits that go far beyond the average coconut oil use that you need to know about.

Added Health Benefits

When you ingest coconut oil , the fatty acids present in the oil help you burn fat quicker and easier. Once this fat is burned, your body can then turn it into energy to use. Because of this absorption method, coconut oil can help to speed up your body’s metabolism.

Coconut oil , as we stated, is also useful when you’re cooking. The reason for this is that it is saturated fat, which is known to be able to handle higher cooking temperatures without comprising the structure of the oil. This means you can turn up the temperature without risking burning the food that you’re cooking.

When we said that you could use coconut oil to moisturize your skin, we weren’t kidding. Check out our list of topicals and lotions you can make here .

Now that you’ve got a better understanding of why coconut oil makes the best mixing agent, let’s get into some of the best ways to make your cannabis-infused coconut oil. But first, let’s review one step that’s crucial to the entire cannabis oil creation process.

Decarboxylating the Flower

While it won’t completely ruin your recipe if you don’t decarb it, we recommend going through the process of decarboxylation before proceeding with the recipe to get the most out of your cannabis.

One of the main reasons you’re going to want to decarb the cannabis is to ensure that you’ve got active THC levels when you’re ready to use it. Decarbing improves the function of the cannabinoids found in cannabis, making it more potent for the person to use it.

Magical Butter Machine Method

The first method we’re going to take a look at is going to be the easiest to use and quickest to clean up. To use the Magical Butter Machine method, these are the ingredients you need:

  • Coconut oil
  • Decarboxylated Cannabis
  • Magical Butter Machine

If you thought it was going to get harder, you thought wrong. These three ingredients are all you need!

Step 1

Place the coconut oil into the Magical Butter Machine.

Step 2

Next, add the cannabis that you’re wanting to use inside as well. You can use as little as an 1/8th and as much as 3 ounces in the machine at once. Just make sure you have the right ratio for the dosage you want.

Step 3

Set your temperature to 160°F. After this, select the option for a 2 Hours and the machine will go to work.

Step 4

Once the process is complete, put on the provided Magical Glove and pour the mixture through the Purify Filter that came in your kit. Squeeze the filter to ensure all oil has been collected.

Step 5

Now you’re ready to use your cannabis coconut oil in any recipe you wish!

Mason Jar Method

Before you can begin the process, gather all your materials, including:

  • Coconut Oil
  • Mason jar with the lid
  • Cannabis (decarboxylated)
  • Crock-Pot
  • Cheesecloth

Now here are the steps to take to create your infused oil.

Step 1

Fill the crockpot with water about halfway. Then take the mason jar and fill it with equal amounts of your cannabis and coconut oil, sealing it with the lid.

Step 2

Set your crockpot to the highest setting. Place the mason jar inside the crockpot, burping the lid about half an hour through the process.

Step 3

Strain the finished product using a cheesecloth. Store the finished product until you’re ready to use it.

Double Boiler Method

Here’s your ingredient list when using this method:

  • Double boiler
  • Coconut oil
  • Decarboxylated cannabis
  • Cheesecloth

This ingredient list has fewer items than the recipe that we listed before.

Step 1

Fill the bottom half of your double boiler. Make sure that you don’t overflow the bowl because once it starts to heat up, it could spill. Bring the boil to a simmer, careful to avoid bubbling temperatures.

Step 2

Next, you’ll want to place the top half of the double boiler over the bottom half. Make sure the bottom of your top bowl isn’t touching the water in the lower half of the double boiler.

Step 3

Add the coconut oil and cannabis to the top half of your double boiler. You’re going to cook it for approximately 90 minutes, total stirring it every 10-15 minutes.

Step 4

After the cooking time is over, pour your mixture into a cheesecloth. Using the cheesecloth, squeeze out all the oil into your storage container. Then store the mixture in either your freezer or refrigerator until it’s time to use it.

Crock Pot Method

Ingredients needed to pull off the crockpot method include:

  • Crockpot
  • Strainer
  • Cheesecloth
  • Thermometer
  • Cannabis

Make sure you’re aware that this method may take longer from start to finish than other methods featured on our list.

Step 1

Before adding your ingredients to the crockpot, you want to make the change to grind down your cannabis flower. Grinding it will make it easier to strain, but you don’t want to grind it into a powder.

Step 2

Set your crockpot to high, and then add water. After doing this, you’ll add the coconut oil to the crockpot and allow it to liquefy before moving on.

Step 3

Begin to stir in the cannabis flower that you ground in step 1. Stir carefully and slowly until all the flour has been saturated in the water/oil mixture. If there isn’t enough water in the pot, slowly add more water as needed.

Step 4

Place the lid on top with a thermometer inside. Check the pot until it’s reached an internal temperature of 250 degrees. Once it’s reached the desired temperature, turn the crockpot to the low setting.

Step 5

Allow the mixture to remain in the crockpot for upwards of 18 hours. During this time, ensure the temperature remains below 270 but higher than 250. If it gets too high, the mixture will begin to burn.

Step 6

After it’s done cooking, place a piece of cheesecloth over your storage container. Pour the mixture into the cheesecloth and squeeze to get out all the oil. Seal the container in the refrigerator to rest overnight.

Step 7

In the morning, when you check on your mixture, you’ll find that the oil has risen to the top and solidified. Remove the foil and discard the excess water. Store your solid cannabis oil-infused coconut oil until you’re ready to use it.

Making Homemade CBD Oil with The MagicalButter MB2e

Ever wondered how to make CBD oil at home? It’s never been easier than with the MagicalButter MB2e, which can also be used to make THC-infused butter and oils.

Full story after the jump.

a word from our sponsors:

The MagicalButter Machine MB2e is unique both for its niche abilities and the ease with which it performs. MagicalButter was created in 2012 by Garyn Angel, and it quickly became popular. In 2019, Angel made the High Times Top 100 Most Influential People in Cannabis. The infuser, with its sleek and simplistic design, can make tinctures, oils, and cooking butter. They even have a base recipe on their website called CannaSugar. Their website is aesthetically pleasing, user-friendly, and chock-full of recipes you can attempt at home with basic ingredients.

How To Make CBD Oil

For my first infusion, I decided on the MagicalButter Cooking Oil. When I say this product is easy to use, I am not exaggerating — the necessary ingredients were cannabis flower, coconut oil, and lecithin. Sunflower or soy lecithin is an emulsifier commonly used in cooking as a binding agent. In this case, it increases the bioavailability of compounds in cannabis, meaning it can help increase the potency of the extract.

I bought liquid sunflower lecithin at my local food co-op. I used standard coconut oil and picked up some CBD-heavy cannabis at the dispensary. I also added some rosemary just for fun.

Decarboxylate Your Flower

It’s important to decarboxylate your cannabis before adding it into the machine in order to activate the compounds in cannabis. To do this, simply separate your flower into smaller bits (grinding is unnecessary) and bake in the oven at 250°F for thirty minutes. Make sure you allow the flower to fully cool off before using it in the recipe (you can put it in the freezer to expedite this process).

Personally, I am not big on THC’s effects but that is why I loved the Magical Butter machine. CBD-heavy cannabis can be used the same way; the site just recommends you decarboxylate it at a slightly higher temperature and for longer than what the manual says. I used the strain Sour Tsunami which has a CBD content of 13.7%, a relaxing and stress-free THC content of 1.9%, and a terpene profile rich in myrcene and alpha-pinene. Both of these terpenes are said to help with anxiety, a benefit further expressed by cannabidiol’s own anxiolytic properties. Sour Tsunami is a strain of cannabis commonly used for treating pain, inflammation, and anxiety, which I felt was perfect for this infusion if I wanted to use the oil as a topical salve.

You simply pour all ingredients into the MB2e and press the corresponding temperature and cooking time buttons located right on the lid of the machine (for oil it is 160°F and a one hour cook time), much like a crockpot or pressure cooker. And that’s it! It will automatically turn off and beep similarly to an oven timer when your concoction has finished brewing. Then, put on the included silicone Love Glove to protect yourself from the hot machine parts and pour your mixture into the filter bag. What you’ll get is a beautiful amber-colored liquid that can be used topically for soreness, pain, and even tattoo healing or as an add-in for butter or oil in many household recipes.

Some unique features of this machine are the rim, decked with LEDs that flash rainbow when in use, and the very-bright-green and almost comical Love Glove that comes with. There is no other product in this market so user-friendly and versatile in its abilities than the Magical Butter Infuser. I had absolutely no issues with it and I am eager to discover all the new possibilities of infused cooking that MagicalButter has made available.
