How to Germinate Cannabis Seeds: Most Popular Methods
Germinating cannabis seeds can be started indoors or outdoors, although starting indoors can give your seeds a better chance of survival. Newly germinated seedlings are quite vulnerable and must be kept safe, which is easier to do indoors.

1) Soak in Water & Hydrogen Peroxide Method to Germinate Cannabis Seeds (Mosca Preferred Method)
Some people find success by soaking their seeds in water with 20% Hydrogen Peroxide for about 12-18 hours then putting directly into soil. You can do this to combine the soak and plant in soil methods, or check for sprouting within 48 hours and then plant.
1) Use distilled water – Use a small, 8 oz. cup of either distilled or reverse osmosis water with 20% Hydrogen Peroxide at room temperature.
2) Drop your seeds into the cup – label it and check them every 8 hours.
3) Swirl around the water – this encourages the seeds to sink to the bottom.
You should begin to see sprouts, what looks like tails, coming out of the seed casing within about 12 to 18 hours. Once you see the beginning of the tap root emerging from the seed, carefully remove from the water and plant into your growing medium with the root facing downward. Water the soil, coco or grow medium with distilled water for the first few weeks.
2) Paper Towel Method to Germinate Cannabis Seeds
Using the paper towel method is simple, requires common products you have at home and has a high rate of germination. For this method you’ll need:
● Paper towels
● Distilled water
● Two clean plates, a sealed container, or a zip lock bag
1) Wet a paper towel – use distilled water or reverse osmosis water at room temperature.
2) Fold it twice – and place your seeds on the wet towel.
3) Keep seeds dark, warm and humid – place the paper towel either in between two covered plates, in a covered container or in a Ziplock bag.
4) Spray with water every few hours. Do not forget to keep your seeds moist! Your seeds will not sprout if left unattended on a dry napkin.

3) Plant in Soil Method to Germinate Cannabis Seeds
Some people have success planting their cannabis seeds directly into quality, potting soil. The key here is to use only fresh, never before used potting soil. If you try to reuse soil that had been used to grow other things the soil is already devoid of precious nutrients.
1) Fill your containers with quality soil – fill your pots or seedling trays with fresh potting soil and tamp down the top.
2) Plant twice as deep as the seed is wide – you don’t want to dig a deep hole to place the seed in. Simply indent with your finger about 1/8 to 1/2 of an inch.
3) Water thoroughly for the next few days – give your containers a good soaking without disrupting the seed. Use a gentle soak method and water until you see water coming out the bottom of the container to make sure they’re good and soaked. You don’t want your containers continually, excessively soggy but you can’t let them dry out either. *use only distilled or purified water for the first few weeks until you can transition to a nutrient solution.
4)Cover loosely with saran wrap to help keep moisture levels up. Remove once the seedlings emerge from the soil.
You should soon see green sprouts popping through the soil. Remember that you do not need to, and should not, provide light to your germinating seeds. Seeds require darkness, the right temperature and humidity to germinate. This protocol outlines a seed germination procedure for Cannabis sativa using a hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) solution as liquid germination media. In this protocol, all three steps including seed sterilization, germination, and seedlings development were carried out in an H2O2 solution of different concentrations; 1% H2O2 solution showed the fastest and the most efficient germination. This protocol also exhibited high germination efficiency for very old cannabis seeds with lower viability. Overall, this protocol demonstrates superior germination compared to water control and reduces the risk of contamination, making it suitable for tissue culture and other sensitive applications.

Cannabis sativa, otherwise known as marijuana or hemp, is an annual primarily dioecious flowering plant in which male/female sex is determined by heteromorphic chromosomes (X and Y) ( Gaudet et al., 2020 ). Cannabis is grown for a variety of agricultural uses; nearly all parts of cannabis plant are used, seeds for food, stem for fiber, and flowers/leaves for medicine. Flowers produce a mix of cannabinoids and aromatic compounds valued for their therapeutic and recreational effects ( Chandra et al., 2017 ). Cannabis plants are propagated either clonally through cuttings or via seed germination. Seed germination is very important for researchers, breeders, and growers alike, especially since seeds from elite cultivars can be very expensive and valuable. Additionally, older seeds may have a reduced germination rate while bacterial and fungal contamination can compromise germination, especially when seeds are germinated for tissue culture propagation. To address these issues, we have developed a rapid, sterile, and efficient seed germination protocol using a 1% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) solution. In this protocol, all three steps including seed sterilization, germination, and seedlings development were carried out in a 1% H2O2 solution. This presents a significant advantage over other sterilants, such as mercuric chloride or bleach, which require additional washing of seeds and a separate germination step on MS solid medium. Our protocol resulted in faster germination and increased seed germination percentage as compared to water control, with no bacterial or fungal contamination, making it suitable for tissue culture and other sensitive applications. In comparison to previous germination methods which take between 4-7 days for radicle appearance and 5-15 days for seedling development ( Wielgus et al., 2008 and references therein), our germination method resulted in radicle appearance in 1 day and allowed us to obtain cannabis seedlings in a very short period (3-7 days) with minimal efforts. This protocol is also very efficient for germination of very old cannabis seeds with lower viability.
Materials and Reagents
All seeds were harvested in our laboratory. Blueberry seeds were not older than 6 months, when employed in the experiments. Finola and X59 seeds were more than 5 years old.
Growth chamber (Sanyo MLR-350, catalog number: 859-600-06): 24 °C, 18 h light/6 h dark cycle, light intensity 200 μmol·m -2 ·sec -1
Seed germination assay
Soak seeds overnight in various concentrations of hydrogen peroxide solution (liquid germination media or germination solutions) as well as in sterile water control (H2O, 1% H2O2, 3% H2O2, 5% H2O2, or 10% H2O2) in 15 or 50 ml screw-cap (Falcon tube). Falcon tubes with submerged seeds in various germination solutions were kept in the dark at room temperature.
Next day, record the percentage of germinated seeds in germination solution (appearance of radicle is considered as germination event) and add fresh respective germination solution after removal of old solution simply by pouring out.
Keep seeds soaked in the same solution for 3 more days in the dark at room temperature and record the percentage of germinated seeds every day.
Thereafter, germinated seeds/seedlings were transferred with or without seed coats from H2O2 solution to MS medium plates to observe the growth of H2O2 solution-germinated seeds/seedlings on MS medium. To transfer, first germinated seeds/seedlings were poured together with H2O2 solution from the Falcon tube to the empty petri plate. Then seedlings were transferred to sterile paper by using forceps to remove excess H2O2 solution. Finally, the germinated seeds/seedlings were transferred to MS media plate by using forceps. The whole transfer process has been carried out in the laminar flow hood.
Parafilm sealed MS medium plates with germinated seeds/seedlings are then transferred to the growth chamber (24 °C, 18 h light/6 h dark cycle and light intensity 200 μmol·m -2 ·sec -1 ) for 3 days to observe the growth and survival of H2O2 solution germinated seeds/seedlings on MS medium.
The H2O2 solution-germinated seeds/seedlings growth was also observed in soil. Pro-Mix HP Mycorrhizae Growing Medium used for soil experiment. The cannabis seeds were soaked in the H2O2 solution (germination solutions) for four days and thereafter, germinated seeds/seedlings were transferred from H2O2 solution to soil pot (Pro-Mix HP Mycorrhizae Growing Medium) to observe the growth and survival of H2O2 solution germinated seeds/seedlings on soil. The soil pots were transferred to the growth chamber (24 °C, 18 h light/6 h dark cycle and light intensity 200 μmol·m -2 ·sec -1 ). The photographs were taken on day 12.
Mean seed germination percentage under various concentrations of H2O2 solution as well as water control were calculated in an excel sheet. Data were shown as mean ± SE.
In this study, we have described a rapid and efficient seed germination protocol for Cannabis sativa. The brief description of this protocol has been reported in Sorokin et al. (2020) . In the current study, we have standardized the optimum concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) solution media for efficient sterilization and rapid germination. We have tested various concentrations of H2O2 solution as well as sterile water control (H2O, 1% H2O2, 3% H2O2, 5% H2O2, or 10% H2O2) for sterilization and germination efficiency. All three steps of germination (seed sterilization, germination, and seedlings development) were carried out in various concentrations of H2O2 solution and seeds were kept in liquid media for four days. Hydrogen peroxide presents several significant advantages over mercuric chloride or bleach sterilants, which require additional seed washing, and separate germination/seedling development step in Murashige and Skoog (MS) agar medium ( Sorokin et al., 2020 ). The 1% H2O2 solution showed rapid and higher germination than higher H2O2 concentrations solution and water control at day 1 ( Figure 1 ). On day 1, 1% H2O2 solution exhibited 82.5% germination as compared to 22.5% germination for 3% H2O2 group, 17.5% germination for 5% H2O2 group and 47.5% germination in water control group ( Figure 1B ). Interestingly, 10% H2O2 did not show any germination on day 1 due to its toxic effect ( Figure 1 ). In 1% H2O2 solution, radicle appearance (germination) occurred within 24 h and seedling development (two fully developed cotyledons and two immature true leaves stage) occurred in 72-96 h ( Figure 1A ). In comparison to previous germination methods which take between 4-7 days for radicle appearance and 5-15 days for seedling development ( Wielgus et al., 2008 and references therein), our germination method resulted in radicle appearance in 1 day and allowed us to obtain cannabis seedlings in a very short period (3-7 days) with minimal efforts ( Figures 1 -2). Considering the possible toxic effect of H2O2 (since germinated seeds/seedlings stayed continuously in H2O2 solution for 4 days), we have checked further survival of germinated seeds/seedlings on MS media and soil ( Figures 2 -3). On MS media, 1% H2O2 solution seedlings survived better than other treatments ( Figure 2 ). The water germinated seeds exhibited contamination and did not survive on MS media ( Figure 2 ). Similarly, due to the toxic effect of higher concentration of H2O2, the 10% H2O2 germinated seeds did not survive on MS media ( Figure 2 ). The 1% H2O2 solution seedlings also survived well on soil ( Figure 3 ). Apart from this, we have also tested our method for more than 5-years old cannabis seeds with lower viability, which demonstrated that 1% H2O2 solution medium exhibited a very high germination percentage (~50%) as compared to water control (~10%) ( Figure 4 ). In conclusion, we have developed a rapid and efficient method for C. sativa seed germination under sterile conditions for tissue culture and other sensitive applications.

Adjust pH to 5.7 with KOH and sterilize by autoclaving at 121 °C for 40 min. 25 ml of MS media on each Petri plate.

There are several methods for germinating cannabis seeds. You can try to germinate weed seeds in a glass of water or use any other method shared below. All of them are correct, but some are preferable to others.
We must always germinate the seeds before growing them indoors, outdoors, in hydroponic or organic crops. To accomplish this, you must follow a series of simple steps ideal for effective and rapid germination.
This post will discuss the various methods for germinating marijuana seeds. We will also provide you with a summary of the benefits and drawbacks of each technique. Let’s get started!
How to germinate cannabis seeds
The first step is to summarize the conditions that must be met for adequate germination. The first thing we must control is humidity or water.
We can use tap water without issue unless it has a very high EC (from 1).
In the meantime, a small amount of distilled or reverse osmosis water will suffice.
Many growers typically add a few drops of hydrogen peroxide (hydrogen peroxide) to the water. As a result, the water contains more oxygen. In addition, hydrogen peroxide’s antifungal properties are used. This reduces the likelihood of fungi appearing.
The pH level of the water must be close to 6. The temperature should be around 22oC, and complexes or root stimulators can be added if desired.
Best seed germination substrates

Once we have the water and the medium for germinating, we must determine the best conditions for growing.
It is recommended that they be kept in a dark and humid environment, but they must be well ventilated. It would help if you also held it at 25 degrees Celsius.
There are some small greenhouses on the market that simulate ideal seed-germination conditions.
Suppose we use kitchen paper as a germination medium. We must maintain these conditions until the seeds germinate, that is, until the radicle appears, which will later become the plant’s main root.
The seeds are planted when this article is about 1 cm long, and after a few days, a tiny seedling can be seen growing.

Substrates and media for cannabis seed germination
Now we’ll go over the most common methods for germinating seeds. Keep in mind that the media must be wet with the previously mentioned water.
1. Peat jiffy
Jiffy is pressed, and dry peat plugs. It would help if you soaked them for some time before transforming them into a cloth bag of the substrate.
Usually, seeds are sown directly in the jiffy without first germinating. In other words, the seedlings germinate now in the jiffies where they will grow. The plant is then transplanted into a pot to begin the growth phase.
Jiffy comes in various sizes and materials, such as peat or coconut fiber. Because this substrate retains a good amount of water, they do not need to be hydrated during the germination stage.
2. Rock wool
Another germination method is Rockwool cubes or plugs, which are widely used, especially when using hydroponic or aeroponic methods. This method cannot contaminate the system with peat or coco residues, as occurs when cultivating with a jiffy.
The seeds germinate quickly in this substrate, but You must control the humidity level of the rock wool because it dehydrates, unlike jiffy, which retains moisture. As a result, a daily check should be performed to ensure that the rock wool is moistened.
3. Root Riot Spread Tacos
Root Riot’s propagation plugs are made of a sponge-like material composed of composted organic materials. Its porous structure aids in maintaining the ideal air/water ratio for root development.
They contribute to the proper balance of water, oxygen, and micronutrients. This method of germination produces excellent results. It is used in the same way that rock wool blocks are.
4. Kitchen paper
Cotton is commonly used in place of kitchen paper. It consists of moistening the folded kitchen paper in a container. It is one of the most common methods for germinating seeds.
It is one of the most common ways to germinate seeds of any plant, and it is sometimes replaced by cotton. It entails moistening the folded kitchen paper in a container (for example, a plate). The more paper you add, the more moisture is retained, and the less the paper must hydrate during the process.
When the seeds are moist, they are placed on top and covered with a thin layer of paper (this step is usually forgotten). The plate is then covered with another of the exact dimensions, with a small gap between them to allow the seeds to “breathe.” As with rock wool, we will keep the medium – in this case, the paper – moist at all times.
If the crop is to be grown outside, another option is to plant the seed directly in a pot or on the ground. This is not usually recommended because the seed may remain deeper than it should. We also push the seed deeper if we water after planting.
As a result, the soil must be watered before sowing the seed. It is also recommended to soak the seeds for one day before planting to promote seed germination.
Germinate marijuana seeds step by step
Marijuana seeds can be germinated using:
Germinate seeds in a jiffy (small bags of peat)
The jiffy must first be soaked in water for 15 minutes. When they begin to swell, They are drained slightly, and a 1cm deep hole is made. The seed is placed in this hole, with its crown facing upwards.
You can buy small plastic greenhouses with holes to allow them to breathe. The hole is filled with unpressed peat, and the jiffy is kept dry, warm, and ventilated. However, keep them away from drafts. Usually, seedlings emerge after three days. The plants took three days to hatch using this method.
Germinate marijuana seeds in Rockwool
To begin germinating seeds, we must first hydrate the Rockwool like we do jiffy. The excess water is then drained, and the seed is planted in the same manner as in the jiffy, one centimeter deep with the crown upwards and covered with rock wool. Because rock wool can dry out, we must keep it moistened daily if required. Small greenhouses are highly recommended because they keep the Rockwool moist and prevent it from drying out.
When the seedling emerges, it will be transplanted to our choice’s substrate or hydroponic system. Germination in Rockwool takes about three days on average.
Germinate seeds in Root Riot
Root riot’s seed germination procedure is very similar to Rockwool. Seedlings are born after four days using this method.
Germinate seeds on kitchen paper
To germinate marijuana seeds using this method, we take a couple of kitchen papers and fold them several times.
We moisten the paper in a deep plate or similar container with water. The seeds are then placed on top and covered with a layer of paper.
We use another deep plate with a small hole for air to enter as a lid.
It is frequently used in conjunction with one of the preceding methods. When the seed radicle appears, it is placed instantly, a cube of rock wool or a propagation block. After a few days, the seedling emerges.
