For indoor grows and greenhouses.
Cull the males by monitoring plants and pulling out “escapes” as soon as they’re spotted. Matthews from Northeast Hemp Commodities advises to be vigilant with hermaphroditic plants. “Even with fem seed or clones you’ll get some hermies if you’re growing more than an acre or two.”
“Most lawmakers are ignorant of the hemp industry in general, let alone a nuanced situation such as this,” says Rye Matthews, Chief Technology Officer at Northeast Hemp Commodities. “States don’t seem concerned. They’re letting farmers do as they wish and expecting that the market and private disputes will work themselves out.”
Surround Cannabis Plants With Different, Taller Plants
By planting industrial hemp and feminized cannabis crops at different times, they will also mature at different times. Caution: Predicting flowering and pollen release is an inexact science.
These can block pollen. Matthews recommends thick windbreaks such as Norway Spruce.
There are a few ways to prevent cross-pollination between hemp and marijuana.
Almost all of the hemp grown in the US today is for CBD oil, according to Darby. The males are only necessary when growing industrial hemp for fiber and seed and those products fetch a much lower price. However, Darby believes that will change as the price of CBD drops and fiber-processing equipment in the US becomes available.
Hemp foods don’t contain any more THC than the plants they come from, so it is impossible to fail a drug test from ingesting them, even in large quantities. Hemp is a superfood that will provide your body with all the essential omegas necessary for a healthy diet. Eat all you want!
Although the value of hemp fiber has been recognized for centuries, other parts of the plant have become valuable in the modern era: seeds, core, and flowers. Today, many thousands of uses for the plant are well known, and what was once seen as plant waste is now seen as valuable commodities.
4. Hemp Foods Can Cause You to Fail a Drug Test

Just like all cannabis species, hemp plants can be male or female (or both, in monoecious species). It is the female plants that are grown to full maturity and harvested at the end of the season. Male plants die off shortly after they have completed pollination.
Although industrial hemp, medical marijuana, and recreational marijuana are all members of the cannabis family, hemp is distinguished from other cannabis species by its extremely low THC content. While medical and recreational cannabis often contain THC levels upwards of 25%, hemp varieties contain less than 1%. Hemp is also cultivated in very different ways from medical and recreational marijuana, mostly at commercial scale for industrial purposes ranging from health food to building materials.

The male hemp plants release pollen female plants use to produce seeds that are either planted for future crops or sold as food. In marijuana fields, male plants are typically eliminated to ensure the maximum production of sinsemilla (seedless) flowers.
The short answer is yes. Though be aware that while hemp does have trace amounts of intoxicating compounds, that doesn’t mean it will get you high. Hemp plants don’t produce enough THC to have an intoxicating effect. CBD, though technically psychoactive, is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid and won’t produce any form of a euphoric high on its own.
The World War II hemp resurgence was short-lived, though. Until the passing of the 2014 Farm Bill, the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 kept industrial production dormant. Today, hemp is rapidly becoming an indispensable resource for CBD oil and other CBD products.
But if the goal isn’t to get an intoxicating high, smoking organic hemp can be an enjoyable and efficient way to experience other cannabinoids like CBD. It’s also never been easier to experiment now that you can find organic hemp flower and pre-rolls online. And while hemp-derived CBD gummies and CBD oil might be all the rage, smoking hemp allows you to self-titrate in real-time — no waiting around for any subtle effects to kick in.
Hemp itself is a plant. But CBD, which might be considered a drug, can be made from hemp. The US Food and Drug Administration has approved a CBD-based drug as a treatment for epilepsy. And many people worldwide use CBD products to treat a variety of ailments, though much more research needs to be done on CBD’s efficacy against everything from cancer to acne.
