More and more owners are beginning to use CBD as a regular part of their dog’s care. Some are doing so in an effort to quell their dog’s anxiety, others are using CBD to help address joint pain, and others are using it for other reasons entirely.

The problem is it can be tricky to administer CBD oil to your pooch. Not only is it tough to get some pups to swallow the oils, but many dogs just don’t like the taste of CBD oils.

Fortunately, there is a solution – simply incorporate CBD oils in some homemade pet treats! This will not only make it easier to administer CBD to your canine companion, but your four-footer will also enjoy nomming on the tasty goodies!

We’ll share some of our favorite CBD recipes below.

First Things First: What Do You Need to Make CBD Dog Treats?

Before picking a recipe and starting to cook, you’ll want to assemble all of the ingredients, tools, and supplies you’re going to need.

The exact ingredients you’ll need for these recipes will obviously vary, but it’s a good idea to make sure you have some basic baking supplies handy. This includes things like flour, eggs, baking soda, and honey. Several of these recipes also call for dog-safe peanut butter (regular peanut butter sometimes contains xylitol — a dangerous ingredient for our pets), dog-safe yogurt, or pumpkin puree.

And, of course, you’ll need a good CBD oil for dogs!

In terms of tools, you won’t need anything too extravagant — just some basic baking gear:

  • A mixing bowl
  • Your favorite cookie cutter (preferably in a dog-appropriate shape)
  • Ice trays
  • A stand mixer (though many of these can be made without one)
  • An air-tight container or two
  • A good kitchen timer
  • A rolling pin
  • A non-stick cookie sheet
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • A flat surface for rolling everything out
  • An oven that’ll hold a good baking temperature

The Potential Health Benefits of CBD for Dogs: Why Give Your Dog CBD?

CBD refers to a substance called cannabidiol. This is just one of the many cannabinoids that interact with the endocannabinoid system, which is a series of receptors found in the nervous system of mammals.

Liquid CBD oil can be extracted from plants and safely administered to furry friends.

While the effects of CBD in dogs haven’t yet been researched extensively, there is a growing body of research that suggests that CBD oil may be beneficial to those suffering from the following conditions:

  • CBD for Dogs withCancer: CBD, amongst other cannabinoids, has been shown to help reduce the growth of cancer cells in mice, though we still don’t know if it works the same way in dogs.
  • CBD for DogAnxiety: Many pet parents report that CBD helps ease their dog’s anxiety, including separation anxiety. A human-based study found that anxiety was reduced for most patients after a month of use, but there’s still not much empirical evidence about how it affects dogs.
  • CBD for Hyper Dogs: There are plenty of anecdotal accounts that support CBD’s calming effect. CBD may be able to help alleviate some of your dog’s stress, but note that it’s important to focus on treating the source of your dog’s hyperactivity.
  • CBD for Dogs withSeizures: CBD has been shown to treat rare forms of epilepsy in humans. Some scientists have begun studying the effects on dogs, and while there aren’t any conclusive results, sources at Colorado State University report “promising results.”
  • CBD for Dogs withArthritis: A 2018 study found that CBD could provide some relief to dogs suffering from arthritis. More research is needed to solidify CBD as a potential treatment, but the results are promising.

Will CBD Get Your Dog High?

CBD will not get your dog high. This is a common misconception since CBD is derived from cannabis.

However, it is just one of the many cannabinoids extracted from the plant. The one that causes a psychoactive effect is tetrahydrocannabinol (better known by the abbreviation THC). THC causes a “high,” but CBD does not. Instead, CBD is primarily thought to provide anti-inflammatory and sedative-like effects. Some evidence even suggests that CBD can actually counteract THC.

In short, CBD will not get your hound high, but it may be able to provide your pooch with a variety of health benefits depending on your dog’s needs.

CBD Oils Recipes for Pets: How to Make CBD Dog Treats and Salve?

Dogs and other pets have an endocannabinoid system in their brain, skin, and other parts of the body. It is very similar to the human endocannabinoid system, meaning CBD oils, edibles and topicals can provide many benefits. The main difference between pets and humans using CBD is that pets weigh less, so the dosage of CBD oil and CBD oil treats needs adjusting to reflect that fact. You can buy premade CBD treats or make your own so your pet treats contain the exact flavors and nutritional content desired.

Is CBD Oil Safe for My Dog?

Research on the use of CBD oil products for pets is limited. However, there are some studies that have demonstrated CBD oil’s benefits for animals.

In one study, dogs were given doses of CBD oil, and they experienced decreased pain with no side effects. In this particular study, the dogs were given 2 mg of CBD oil twice daily. (PMID: 30083539). In general, CBD oil is safe for your dog but with the following conditions.

  • Administer in an appropriate dosage for your pet’s weight
  • Use a high-quality CBD oil
  • Use CBD oil derived from the hemp plant and not just hemp seeds to get CBD benefits
  • Be aware of the potential of THC being present in products in states where marijuana is legal

It is very important to buy from companies that provide a clear ingredients list for your review. Most of the information available today is based on the experiences of pet owners. Many owners decide to try CBD oil to see if it helps calm their pet that experiences separation anxiety or has a fear of fireworks or if it benefits a health issue.

How Much CBD Should I Give to My Dog?

There is not a standard CBD dosing recommendation for pets at this time. One recommendation is to allow one milligram per 10 pounds of your pet’s weight. This means you need to know how many milligrams of CBD are in a milliliter of CBD oil in the bottle. A standard bottle dropper normally holds one milliliter of CBD oil.

To obtain the dosage amount, divide the CBD milligrams by the total amount of oil in the bottle. For example, one 30 milliliter bottle of CBD has 500 milligrams of CBD. One dropper of CBD oil is 16.6 milligrams of CBD:

500 mg CBD/30 ml = 16.6 mg / 1 ml.

If your dog weighs 20 pounds, you will only need to administer two milligrams (20 pounds/10 pounds), a small amount in the dropper.

How to Make CBD Dog Treats, Oils, and Salve?

CBD pet care products come in several forms.

  • CBD edibles – chewable capsules and treats
  • CBD oils – add to food or place under the pet’s tongue
  • CBD topicals – balms, salves, and creams rubbed on the skin

You can buy pet treats and salves or make your own. Following are a few recipes to give you an idea of what is involved in making CBD oil treats or salves for dogs.
